These two walks are not really alternatives — they serve different purposes, require different levels of commitment, and offer genuinely different experiences.
The honest answer for most people: do Kosciuszko now, and start planning the Snowies Alpine Walk for a future trip.

Who should do the Summit Walk
The Kosciuszko Summit Walk is the right choice if you want to stand at Australia's highest point, you're doing a day trip or short weekend to the Snowy Mountains, you're walking with mixed-ability group including less experienced hikers, or you want a genuine alpine experience without the logistical commitment of a multi-day walk.
It's also the logical precursor to the Snowies Alpine Walk. Doing the summit walk first gives you a feel for the alpine environment, your own pace and fitness in that terrain, and how your body handles the elevation — all useful data before committing to four days above the snowline.
Who should do the Snowies Alpine Walk
The Snowies Alpine Walk is the right choice if you're an experienced day walker ready to move into multi-day walking, you want an immersive 4-day alpine experience rather than a summit tick, you're comfortable camping in exposed alpine conditions, and you have time for proper preparation — gear, fitness, logistics and permits.
The Snowies Alpine Walk traverses some of Australia's most remote and beautiful alpine terrain. It passes through ecosystems that the summit walk doesn't reach — deeper into the Main Range, past glacial lakes, through sub-alpine woodland and across the open plains of the Kosciuszko plateau. It's a different category of experience.
Many people do both on the same trip — Kosciuszko Summit Walk on day one, then depart on the Snowies Alpine Walk the following morning. It's a physically demanding combination but logistically straightforward and gives you the full picture of what Kosciuszko National Park offers.
Can you do the Snowies Alpine Walk without experience?
Not comfortably. The Snowies Alpine Walk involves four days of camping above the snowline, navigation across open terrain without continuous track markers, and exposure to alpine weather that can deteriorate rapidly. It's suitable for people who have done multi-day overnight walks before and are comfortable camping in conditions that can include cold, rain and wind at any time of year.
If you haven't done a multi-day walk, the Kosciuszko Summit Walk is the right starting point. Build from there.
